Last night we watched the Criterion DVD of Pygmalion with Wendy Hiller and Leslie Howard. It was excellent. It was directed by Howard and Anthony Asquith, David Lean was the editor and Arthur Honegger, no less, did the music. Especially interesting in that George Bernard Shaw (GBS) chose Hiller to be his first Pygmalion on film – she was too young for the original stage production. Some of the play has been cut for time but much of the GBS wit remains. In fact, GBS had a hand in the screenplay and won an Oscar for his pains. It is said that he wrote some new scenes for the film.
